ADNOC Joins AEW 2026 as Platinum Partner Following $1B Entry into South Africa's Fuel Market

Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), one of the world's largest energy companies with production of approximately 4 million barrels per day and a $150 billion global investment plan, will participate as a Platinum Partner at African Energy Week (AEW) 2026 in Cape Town from October 12-16. ADNOC's participation brings one of the most active Gulf investors in African energy to AEW's highest partnership tier, at a moment when its commercial footprint on the continent is expanding rapidly.

In July 2026, ADNOC Distribution signed a definitive agreement to acquire Shell Downstream South Africa for approximately $1 billion, adding 580 fuel stations along with wholesale fuels, aviation and lubricants operations to its portfolio. Shell Downstream South Africa sold approximately 3.5 billion liters of fuel and operated 360 convenience stores in 2025. The acquisition is expected to close in 2027 and will expand ADNOC Distribution's global network by roughly 55% to nearly 1,600 stations and increase annual fuel volumes by about 20%. A 28% stake will be sold to a local empowerment partner and an employee stock ownership plan to comply with South Africa's broad-based Black Economic Empowerment requirements, while the Shell brand will be retained under a long-term licensing agreement.

South Africa is the fourth market in which ADNOC Distribution has established a retail fuel presence, following the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Egypt, where it acquired a 50% stake in TotalEnergies Marketing Egypt in 2023. The pattern reflects a broader Gulf strategy of acquiring downstream distribution networks in markets where Western majors are divesting, and it places ADNOC in two of Africa's largest fuel economies ahead of AEW 2026.

ADNOC's international investment arm, XRG, has grown to an enterprise value of roughly $151 billion since its launch in 2024 and is investing across natural gas, energy infrastructure and strategic assets globally. The company’s flagship Ruwais LNG project in the UAE, currently under development at 9.6 mtpa capacity with commercial operations targeted for 2028, has already secured long-term offtake commitments covering more than 90% of output.

The Platinum Partnership at AEW reflects a wider trend of Gulf capital entering African energy markets. GCC member states have collectively invested more than $100 billion in Africa over the past decade, and the pace has accelerated in recent years. ADNOC's downstream acquisitions in South Africa and Egypt are the most visible example, but Gulf interest extends across upstream, LNG, infrastructure and fuel distribution.

“ADNOC's partnership is a statement about where Gulf capital sees opportunity in African energy. When a company of this scale takes an active position here, as ADNOC has in South Africa and Egypt, it raises the profile of the entire continent as an investment destination,” says NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the African Energy Chamber.

As a Platinum Partner at AEW 2026, ADNOC is expected to engage with operators, governments and investors on downstream investment, energy trading and the growing commercial ties between the Gulf and African energy markets.
