AEW 2024 to Host SANPC Investor Roadshow on November 7

South Africa’s newly established state-owned oil corporation the South African National Petroleum Company (SANPC) will host an Investor Roadshow at African Energy Week (AEW): Invest in African Energy 2024. The roadshow aims to provide insight into South Africa’s petroleum landscape and the emerging role the SANPC will have in driving projects forward, and will open with a keynote from South Africa’s Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources Gwede Mantashe. The event represents the first of a series of global roadshows in Africa, Europe and the Middle East, organized by Energy Capital & Power.

Under the theme Creating a Strong Foundation for the Enablement of South Africa’s Energy Champion, the event takes place at on November 7 at 09:30 in room 2.6 at the Cape Town International Convention Center. Remarks will be delivered by Central Energy Fund Chairperson Ayanda Noah and the Department of the Mineral Resources and Energy’s Director General Jacob Mbele, while SANPC CEO Godfrey Moagi will offer insight into the strategic role the company will play in the country. A panel discussion will take place, featuring Minister Mantashe, Moagi and Dr. Bongani Siyadini, COO of the Petroleum Agency of South Africa.

The SANPC was established in September 2024 under efforts by the government to enhance energy security, drive new technologies and foster strategic partnerships within the petroleum industry. The company is tasked with overseeing strategic planning, coordination and governance of the country’s petroleum resources and will work closely with private players to unlock the full potential of the country’s oil and gas resources.

Strategically located in close proximity to proven plays in Namibia and Mozambique, South Africa offers significant potential in oil and gas development. While in its infancy, the petroleum sector offers a range of investment opportunities for foreign players. Offshore, the country’s Orange Basin could yield sizeable discoveries given its shared proximity to major finds made in Namibia. The country’s Brulpadda and Luiperd gas discoveries – situated in Block 11B/12B – represented some of Africa’s biggest offshore finds for 2019. Onshore, the country could contain as much as 209 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, with various exploration programs underway to determine the full scope of onshore reserves.

Despite this potential, the development of South African oil and gas has been slow. As such, the SANPC was created as a strong partner for international firms and aims to drive investment and development across the entire petroleum value chain. Merging Central Energy Fund’s subsidiaries, including the South African Gas Development Company, PetroSA and the Strategic Fuel Fund, the SANPC leverages the experiences of these firms to create greater certainty, capacity and know-how. The SANPC Investor Roadshow will explore the strategic value the newly-established company will play in the country’s petroleum industry.
