EG LNG Spearheads Regional Gas Monetization - Joins AEW 2025 as Silver Partner
Underscoring a commitment to advancing Equatorial Guinea’s position as a leading gas producer and regional processing hub, natural gas producer EG LNG has confirmed its participation at African Energy Week (AEW): Invest in African Energies as a Silver Partner. Set to take place in Cape Town from September 29 to October 3, AEW: Invest in African Energies serves as the premier platform for EG LNG to engage with global investors and project developers as the company strives to advance gas monetization and development on a regional scale.
With sights on becoming a regional gas processing hub, Equatorial Guinea has been advancing gas-related infrastructure developments in recent months. In June this year, ConocoPhillips transported its inaugural LNG cargo from the Punta Europa EG LNG terminal, marking a milestone for the Gas Mega Hub promoted by the Ministry of Hydrocarbons and Mining Development. Loading operations began on June 6 and concluded by June 9 aboard the Maran LNG vessel, with senior company representatives meeting the crew during the process. The cargo forms part of the supermajor’s strategy to unlock value from its global LNG portfolio while contributing to regional supply security.
EG LNG operates the Punta Europa LNG Terminal in Malabo, a cornerstone of Equatorial Guinea’s gas processing infrastructure, and leads the Backfill Project, which leverages the existing Alba Gas Plant and EG LNG facilities to process gas from the Alen offshore platform. These projects form a critical component of the country’s Gas Mega Hub initiative, which aims to consolidate offshore gas volumes and develop Equatorial Guinea into a regional gas processing and export hub.
At the helm of Equatorial Guinea’s gas monetization strategy, EG LNG continues to drive strategic initiatives to expand domestic and regional gas supply. As part of the LNG2Africa initiative, EG LNG is supporting the Akonikien LNG project, which enables supply of LNG to African countries with limited infrastructure, advancing cross-border energy access. In addition, EG LNG is working to identify new gas sources to secure a longer operational life for its LNG plant and potentially develop new LNG trains to strengthen long-term capacity.
Beyond its commercial operations, EG LNG remains committed to social responsibility in Equatorial Guinea, implementing projects focused on education, health, culture and agriculture. The company has supported the construction of schools and medical centers and continues to invest in national content development, local supplier engagement and workforce training to ensure communities benefit from the country’s growing gas sector.
Recent developments have reinforced Equatorial Guinea’s regional energy role. In August 2024, the Akonikien LNG storage and regasification terminal – the first on West Africa’s mainland – was inaugurated, providing 14,000m3 capacity for inland gas distribution via pipelines and truck loading. Additionally, the government plans a new 2025 oil and gas licensing round, including Blocks H and 01, to attract investment, advanced technologies and exploration activity, supporting ongoing expansion of upstream production.
“EG LNG’s continued expansion and commitment to both infrastructure development and community engagement exemplify how African gas projects can drive economic growth, regional energy security and sustainable development. Their work highlights Equatorial Guinea’s rising role as a key LNG hub in West Africa and signals to investors that the country is open for business,” states Tomás Gerbasio, VP of Commercial and Strategic Engagement, African Energy Chamber.
AEW: Invest in African Energies is the platform of choice for project operators, financiers, technology providers and government, and has emerged as the official place to sign deals in African energy. Visit www.aecweek.com for more information about this exciting event.
