Golar LNG CEO Joins AEW 2025 Amid FLNG Expansion in Africa

Karl Fredrik Staubo, CEO of marine infrastructure operator Golar LNG, will speak at this year’s African Energy Week (AEW): Invest in African Energies conference, taking place September 29–October 3 in Cape Town. His participation comes as Golar LNG expands its portfolio of operational FLNG vessels in Africa – a move expected to spur new collaborations as nations fast-track gas development. Golar LNG is also a Gold Partner at AEW 2025: Invest in African Energies.

With over 620 trillion cubic feet of proven natural gas reserves, Africa is positioned to establish gas as a cornerstone of economic growth and industrialization. FLNG technology has emerged as one of the most transformative solutions, enabling offshore monetization, shortening project timelines and redefining what is possible for energy security and industrial growth.

Golar LNG’s track record underscores its position as a market leader in LNG innovation. In July 2025, its Gimi FLNG unit commenced commercial operations at the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) development offshore Senegal and Mauritania. Backed by an estimated 15 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, the facility is designed to produce 2.4 million tons of LNG annually, ramping up to 2.7 million tons at full capacity. This milestone not only advances regional energy integration but also strengthens West Africa’s role in the global LNG market.

In Nigeria, the company is advancing large-scale gas developments. In 2024, it signed a project development agreement with the state-owned Nigerian National Petroleum Company for a new FLNG facility in the Niger Delta. Targeting first gas in 2027, the project will process up to 500 million standard cubic feet of gas per day, producing LNG, LPG and condensate. As a cornerstone of Nigeria’s “Decade of Gas” agenda, the development will support industrialization, power generation and monetization of the country’s 209 trillion cubic feet of reserves.

In Cameroon, Golar LNG’s Hilli Episeyo FLNG unit continues to stand as a model for mid-scale LNG deployment. Since becoming the world’s first LNG conversion project in 2018, Hilli Episeyo has maintained strong operational uptime, reached its 100th LNG cargo milestone in 2023, and continues to monetize associated gas at a capacity of 2.4 million tons per annum. The project firmly positioned Cameroon as a global LNG exporter and remains a benchmark for future FLNG ventures.

By operating across Senegal, Mauritania, Nigeria and Cameroon, Golar LNG has demonstrated how FLNG can transform stranded and underutilized gas into export revenues, domestic power and industrial feedstock. Staubo’s participation at AEW 2025 will provide delegates with first-hand insights into scaling this model across the continent, cementing FLNG’s role as a cornerstone of Africa’s energy transition.

“Golar LNG’s ability to consistently deliver scalable, bankable FLNG projects has redefined how African nations can monetize gas resources. By combining technical expertise with innovative financing and long-term vision, the company has positioned itself as a true partner in driving Africa’s energy transformation,” said Tomás Gerbasio, Vice President of Commercial and Strategic Engagement at the African Energy Chamber.

AEW: Invest in African Energies is the platform of choice for project operators, financiers, technology providers and government, and has emerged as the official place to sign deals in African energy. Visit https://aecweek.com for more information about this exciting event.
