Northern Ocean Strengthens African Presence as Bronze Partner at AEW 2025

International offshore drilling contractor Northern Ocean will participate as a Bronze Partner at African Energy Week (AEW): Invest in African Energies 2025, taking place from September 29 to October 3 in Cape Town. The company will join leaders, innovators and key decision-makers at the continent’s premier energy event to strengthen its presence across Africa’s energy landscape.

Northern Ocean recently signed a contract with a subsidiary of Rhino Resources for its Deepsea Mira semi-submersible rig to support operations offshore Namibia starting mid-July 2025. The contract covers drilling the Volans-1X exploration well on the PEL 85 license, plus one additional firm well and three optional wells, with an estimated firm duration of 115 days and a projected value of approximately $40 million.

In addition to the Deepsea Mira rig, Northern Ocean’s Deepsea Bollsta has built a strong operational track record offshore Namibia, recently completing a contract with a subsidiary of Chevron and preparing for a long-term field development program with Springfield Group in Ghana. The rig remains stationed in Africa, enabling rapid deployment for exploration and development campaigns across the continent’s most prospective basins.

Under CEO Arne Jacobsen, who will feature as a speaker at AEW 2025, Northern Ocean has expanded its African footprint since 2022, maintaining continuous operations in Namibia while supporting local content development and workforce upliftment. The company’s strategically positioned rigs are ready to support upcoming exploration campaigns across Namibia, South Africa and Ghana, reinforcing its role as a trusted partner to international operators and national oil companies.

“Increasing exploration is key to unlocking Africa’s vast energy resources and driving sustainable economic growth across the continent. Northern Ocean’s advanced drilling capabilities and steadfast commitment will play a critical role in transforming Africa’s estimated reserves into tangible development outcomes that benefit millions,” said Tomás Gerbasio, VP of Commercial and Strategic Engagement, African Energy Chamber.

AEW: Invest in African Energies is the platform of choice for project operators, financiers, technology providers and government, and has emerged as the official place to sign deals in African energy. Visit www.aecweek.com for more information about this exciting event.
