OMV joins African Energy Week (AEW) 2025: Driving new partnerships in Libya and across Africa

OMV joins African Energy Week (AEW) 2025: Driving new partnerships in Libya and across Africa

The African Energy Chamber is excited to welcome OMV to AEW 2025 under the theme, “Invest in African Energies.” The Austrian company's participation – as it transitions to become an integrated sustainable chemicals, fuels, and energy company – highlights its commitment to collaborating with African companies and stakeholders to drive shared growth and sustainable development.

Why OMV’s participation matters:

• Longstanding partnership: OMV has been a trusted partner in Libya since 1975. The company has worked closely with the National Oil Corporation (NOC) through asset acquisitions, exploration, and field development and redevelopment, both onshore and offshore. Additionally, OMV has maintained a strong and reliable partnership in Tunisia since 1971.

• Renewed activity: After a 13-year hiatus, OMV and other international companies have resumed exploration in Libya’s Sirte Basin, signaling renewed confidence in the country’s energy sector and its vast, untapped potential.

• Strategic alignment: OMV’s focus on natural gas as a bridging fuel supports Africa’s energy transition goals and promotes economic growth and regional energy security.

Recently, senior OMV executives hosted H.E. Dr. Khalifa Abdulsadek, Libya’s Minister of Oil and Gas, and Mr. Ahmed Ammar, Board Member of the NOC, in Vienna. The meeting reaffirmed the strength of the long-time OMV-NOC partnership and explored opportunities for future collaboration.

Leadership perspectives:

“The foundation of our success lies in working closely together, understanding local conditions, and building trust. A deep appreciation of local culture, aligned decision-making, a strong willingness to learn from one another and community engagement have all been central to our collaboration, ensuring long-term value for all stakeholders,” says Berislav Gašo, Executive Vice President Energy, OMM.

“OMV’s continued investment and technical expertise in Africa demonstrate the kind of strategic engagement that strengthens regional energy security, drives economic growth, and creates sustainable opportunities for local communities. These efforts underscore the immense potential for long-term partnerships and forward-looking energy development across the continent,” says Tomás Gerbasio, Vice President Commercial and Strategic Engagement, African Energy Chamber
