ReconAfrica Returns to AEW as Onshore Namibia Campaign Enters New Phase
Canadian junior oil and gas explorer Reconnaissance Energy Africa (ReconAfrica) will participate at the African Energy Week (AEW) 2026 Conference and Exhibition as a Bronze Partner, returning to Cape Town on the back of strong operational milestones reached in 2026. The company flowed hydrocarbons to surface from two separate formations at its Kavango West 1X (KW1X) discovery well earlier this year, marking the first ever hydrocarbon recovery from an onshore well in Namibia.
AEW has tracked ReconAfrica's Kavango Basin story from the exploration stage through to this year's flow tests, and the 2026 edition arrives as the company's onshore campaign enters a new commercial phase. ReconAfrica operates PEL 73 with a 70% working interest alongside partners BW Energy and the National Petroleum Corporation of Namibia (NAMCOR).
Downhole testing at KW1X began in early June 2026, when the company confirmed natural gas recovery from the Elandshoek formation across three separate intervals. The Huttenberg formation to the north also saw gas and potential liquids reach the surface. The next step is a horizontal sidetrack designed to open up to 1,000 meters of reservoir section and establish commercially meaningful flow rates. The test will shape the path toward appraisal and long-term development decisions.
ReconAfrica has identified 22 prospective structures across PEL 73 alone, and its total acreage footprint spans roughly 13 million contiguous acres across Namibia, Angola and Botswana. An MoU signed in 2025 extended the company's position into Angola with approximately 5.2 million acres adjoining its 6.3 million-acre Namibian holdings. Field sampling of surface oil seeps in the Angolan MoU area wrapped up in the first half of 2026. ReconAfrica also entered Gabon's offshore sector in September 2025, signing a Production Sharing Agreement with state-owned Gabon Oil Company for the Ngulu block off the central coast.
ReconAfrica’s return to AEW aligns with a period of accelerating operational momentum across three countries in two separate geological settings, giving delegates at AEW 2026 a direct window into one of the most closely watched frontier exploration programs on the continent. To support exploration activities, ReconAfrica also closed an oversubscribed $36 million financing round at the start of 2026 and reported $24.2 million in cash value at the end of the second quarter. These moves reflect growing international confidence in the company’s operational strategy.
