Renegade Intel to Examine the Race for Africa’s Digital Energy Workforce

As Africa’s energy sector becomes more digital, distributed and data-driven, the continent faces a growing challenge beyond infrastructure investment: developing the workforce capable of operating it. AI, smart grids, IoT-enabled renewable assets and predictive analytics are reshaping electricity systems, driving demand for engineers, technicians and operators with advanced digital skills.

Against this backdrop, the Building Africa’s Data-First Energy Workforce panel at the Renegade Intel platform, taking place during African Energy Week (AEW) 2026 from October 12–16 in Cape Town, will examine how developers, utilities, governments and educational institutions can build the next generation of energy professionals equipped for a digital energy future.

From Classrooms to Control Rooms

Across Africa, organizations are already redesigning workforce development to meet changing industry needs.

Utilities are leading the shift. South Africa’s Eskom has deployed nearly two million smart meters, generating vast amounts of operational data that require engineers trained in AI, machine learning and grid analytics to improve network performance and integrate renewable power safely.

Continental institutions are also expanding digital skills, with the African Energy Commission – supported by Sida – recently launching an online Smart Grid Technology Training program. The program equips utility professionals with expertise in grid optimization, advanced data analytics and variable renewable energy integration.

Meanwhile, governments are modernizing technical education. In Kenya, a $300 million World Bank-backed program has upgraded 70 technical institutions, introducing specialized training in robotics and renewable energy systems to prepare students for increasingly digital electricity networks.

What’s more, initiatives such as the Digital Energy Challenge provide African energy start-ups and SMEs with technical bootcamps, AI masterclasses and utility mentorships, helping developers deploy digital solutions for mini-grids and decentralized power systems.

Building the Workforce Behind Africa’s Energy Transition

As AI adoption accelerates and renewable energy deployment expands, demand is growing for professionals capable of managing connected infrastructure, interpreting operational data and optimizing increasingly automated electricity systems.

The Renegade Intel discussion will explore how governments can strengthen local digital skills through policy, how utilities are retraining existing workforces, how developers are embedding AI capabilities into technical operations and how universities can better align engineering education with industry requirements.

By bringing together energy companies, technology providers, policymakers and training institutions, the session will highlight practical strategies for ensuring Africa develops the talent needed to support its rapidly evolving energy sector.
