Russian companies offer a wealth of expertise for African countries, specifically in the oil and gas industry. As one of the world’s biggest oil and gas producers, Russia is showing a strong commitment to taking its experience, investment and knowledge global, and Africa is a priority market in this regard. Many of Russia’s largest producing companies, including Lukoil, Gazprom and Novatek, are strengthening their African portfolios. Notably, Gazprom is spearheading a refinery upgrade in Mossel Bay in South Africa. The gas-to-fuel facility will support the country’s efforts to enhance fuel security while strengthening the role of gas in the energy matrix. Lukoil is driving a series of on- and offshore projects in the Republic of the Congo – with an agreement signed last month to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the energy sector.
With over 125 billion barrels of proven oil reserves and 620 trillion cubic feet of proven natural gas, Africa shows great promise in exploration and production. While development is progressing rapidly, Russian partnerships and investments will serve to only accelerate the pace and success of oil and gas projects. The Russia-Africa Partnership Roundtable will explore this very opportunity, with panelists outlining strategic areas of cooperation.
Meanwhile, in the power and nuclear sector, Russian companies have demonstrated a strong intention to support development in Africa. Specifically, companies such as Rosatom – Russia’s state-owned nuclear corporation – have signed a string of deals across the continent in recent months, all of which are aimed at boosting Africa’s nuclear capacity. Deals include with the Republic of Congo to collaborate on the peaceful utilization of nuclear energy and hydroelectric power; with Guinea-Conakry to cooperate on the development of floating nuclear plants; with Burkina Faso for the construction of a nuclear facility in the country; and many more.
“Russia represents a strong partner for African nations and Russian companies stand to play a much larger role across the continent. From leading high-impact oil and gas developments to collaborating on key power infrastructure projects to supporting policy development and skills development, Russia has shown itself to be committed to Africa’s energy sector and development. Going ahead, cooperation with Russia will only serve to strengthen Africa’s energy sector,” states NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the African Energy Chamber.
During AEW: Invest in African Energy 2024, a Russia-Africa Partnership Roundtable will unpack further opportunities for Russian companies in Africa’s energy industry. Panelists will explore how Russia’s success in low-carbon energy developments can support African development. The discussion will cover various topics, from financing energy projects to implementing supportive regulations to screating integrated energy systems and more.
