SANEDI Joins AEW 2025 as Silver Partner, Driving South Africa’s Energy Transformation
The South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI) has been announced as a Silver Partner for African Energy Week (AEW) 2025: Invest in African Energies, underscoring its central role in South Africa's energy transformation and its commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions across the continent.
As a state owned agency of the Department of Electricity and Energy, SANEDI leads initiatives in renewable energy, energy efficiency and industrial decarbonization. Its participation in AEW: Invest in African Energies 2025 reflects its mission to drive energy innovation and investment across South Africa and the wider African continent. By working closely with international partners and stakeholders, SANEDI aims to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy while broadening access to energy.
In April 2025, SANEDI issued a Request for Proposals for a transaction advisor to develop an electric mobility project in South Africa, accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In May 2025, SANEDI partnered with Standard Bank's LookSee platform to launch South Africa’s first energy and carbon certification for existing homes, enabling homeowners to assess and improve the energy efficiency and carbon footprint of their properties.
Addressing electricity affordability, SANEDI has been directed by Minister of Electricity and Energy, Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, to develop recommendations to make electricity more accessible for South African households. The institute is also exploring alternative electricity pricing models to balance equitable access with the need for sustainable infrastructure and energy conservation.

In addition to its domestic energy leadership, SANEDI has been appointed as the Secretariat for the Energy Transitions Working Group under South Africa’s G20 Presidency in 2025. This appointment underscores SANEDI’s expertise in energy research, innovation and policy coordination, placing the Institute at the center of South Africa’s efforts to lead global discussions on the energy transition.
