Sintana Energy Joins AEW 2025 as Bronze Partner - Advances Namibian, Angolan Projects

Canadian oil and gas exploration company Sintana Energy is advancing a series of strategic projects in Namibia and Angola, working in close collaboration with partners to unlock new frontiers both on- and offshore. As these projects advance, the company has joined the African Energy Week (AEW): Invest in African Energies conference – scheduled for September 29 to October 3 in Cape Town – as a Bronze Partner.

Signaling its regional expansion, Sintana Energy entered the Angolan market in May 2025 through a strategic partnership with independent oil and gas company Corcel. An agreement was signed between the partners, granting Sintana Energy a 5.88% equity stake in a newly-formed Special Purpose Vehicle, which will hold Corcel’s 85% interest in Block KON 16 – situated in Angola’s onshore Kwanza basin. The $25 million transaction – closing in Q3, 2025 – comes as the partners strive to unlock new opportunities onshore Angola, with further insights expected to be shared at AEW: Invest in African Energies 2025.

AEW: Invest in African Energies is the platform of choice for project operators, financiers, technology providers and government, and has emerged as the official place to sign deals in African energy. Visit www.aecweek.com for more information about this exciting event.

Block KON 16 has a history of successful exploration, with an established petroleum system in both post- and pre-salt intervals. The block has a large, multi-target prospect with preliminary estimates showing several million barrels of recoverable oil. Given these exploration opportunities, Sintana Energy and Corcel are advancing a 2D seismic data acquisition program to refine a targeting area ahead of a potential 2026 discovery. The campaign will be completed by the end of 2025 and utilizes existing data in tandem with newly-acquired data. The companies have also established a Joint Study and Bid Agreement, outlining intentions to pursue additional exploration and production opportunities in Angola. This deal reflects the companies’ commitment to unlocking future resources across the market.

Beyond Angola, Sintana Energy is working with partners in Namibia to advance exploration projects. The company has interests in five offshore assets and one onshore block in Namibia, covering three primary basins: the prolific Orange Basin, the Walvis Basin and the onshore Waterberg Basin. The partners recently received a second 12-month exploration extension for Block PEL 79, extending the current license period to July 2026. The block is highly promising given its proximity to discoveries such as Capricornus-1X, made in neighboring PEL 85. At PEL 87, the partners are currently seeking a farm-in partner to fund exploration drilling. The block offers significant prospectivity, with high quality 6,593 km² of 2D seismic data available.

Meanwhile at PEL 83 – comprising Block 2813A and 2814B and situated in the heart of the Orange Basin – Sintana Energy and its partners Galp Energia and NAMCOR have witnessed a string of exploratory success. The companies announced a third discovery at the licence in early 2025, with the Mopane-3X well showcasing significant columns of light oil and gas condensate in high quality sandstones across AVO-10. Light oil columns were also identified in AVO-13 and the deeper sand, underscoring further exploration and appraisal opportunities at the Mopane complex.

Stepping into this picture, Sintana Energy’s participation at AEW: Invest in African Energies – Africa’s largest energy event – underscores the company’s commitment to unlocking new frontiers in African oil and gas. The partnership is set to open new opportunities for regional growth and collaboration at a time when Sintana Energy is making considerable advancements across its Angolan and Namibian projects.

“Sintana Energy demonstrates a continued commitment to identifying and pursuing new exploration prospects in Africa. The company’s asset portfolio showcases a drive to unlock new offshore and onshore basins, and highlights the valuable role partnerships play in delivering successful exploration and development campaigns in strategic basins,” states Tomás Gerbasio, VP of Commercial and Strategic Engagement, African Energy Chamber.
