South Africa’s NERSA Confirms Bronze Sponsorship For AEW, Solidifying Its Commitment to Energy Security
The National Energy Regulator of South Africa will participate in African Energy as a Bronze Sponsor.
In a significant development for Africa's energy sector, the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) will be participating as a Bronze Sponsor at the highly anticipated African Energy Week (AEW) 2023, scheduled to take place October 16–20 in Cape Town. NERSA's presence at AEW underscores its unwavering commitment to advancing energy security and sustainability in South Africa.
NERSA, established as a juristic person under the National Energy Regulator Act, 2004, holds a critical mandate in regulating South Africa’s electricity, piped gas and petroleum pipeline industries. With a vision to be a recognized world-class leader in energy regulation, NERSA strives to regulate the energy industry in line with government laws, policies, international best practices, and standards to support sustainable and orderly development.
As a regulatory authority responsible for overseeing South Africa's energy landscape, NERSA plays a vital role in promoting energy security and sustainability. Its regulatory principles of transparency, accountability, integrity, efficiency and commitment to the public interest ensure that decisions are made in a manner that balances the needs of all stakeholders.
One of NERSA's notable contributions to energy security lies in its approval of various solar photovoltaic (PV) projects and renewable energy initiatives, including the SOLA Group’s 200 MW solar PV project. Additionally, in June 2022, NERSA granted approval for 15 solar PV projects, totalling 139 MW, intended for both commercial and private use. Among these projects, 11 will be integrated into Eskom's grid, while the remaining four will be connected to the grid networks of Ekurhuleni, Emfuleni, and Tshwane Municipalities. These projects hold significant potential to diversify the country's energy mix. By supporting the integration of renewable energy sources, NERSA aligns with South Africa's broader sustainable development goals and commitments to combat climate change.
Meanwhile, NERSA's conditional approval for a 2.5 GW nuclear plant at Thyspunt complements Koeberg's capacity, contributing significantly to South Africa's baseload power generation. Baseload power provides a constant and reliable source of electricity, which is crucial for maintaining energy security and meeting the country's electricity demands, especially during peak periods. Furthermore, the inclusion of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in the energy mix provides added resilience to the overall energy system. This strategic combination of Small Modular Reactors and Thyspunt developments aims to ensure a stable and sustainable energy supply for South Africa's greener future.
On the gas front, NERSA has recently aligned with South Africa’s Mineral Resources and Energy Ministry in approving Eskom's request to build a 3,000-megawatt gas power station in Richards Bay. Anticipated to be operational by 2028, this gas plant is expected to generate enough electricity to mitigate at least three stages of load shedding.
