Prof. Sampson Mamphweli

Prof. Mamphweli is the Head of the Department for Science and Innovation’s Energy Secretariat at the South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI). In this role, he leads several flagship research, development and innovation programmes, including the Coal COâ‚‚-to-X Programme, the Renewable and Sustainable Energy Hub and Spokes Programme, Hydrogen South Africa, and Energy Storage. He holds a PhD in Physics and has published nearly 100 research articles, including four book chapters, with over 2,000 citations on Google Scholar. To date, he has successfully supervised more than 26 Masters and PhD students. His academic recognition includes appointment as a Full Professor of Process Engineering at Stellenbosch University, where he delivered his inaugural lecture in 2018, and as an Associate Professor at the University of Fort Hare in 2015. He was the recipient of the University of Fort Hare’s Vice- Chancellor’s Emerging Researcher Medal in 2012 and previously earned his Masters degree with distinction from the University of Venda. Prof Mamphweli currently serves as an Extraordinary Professor in Chemical Engineering at Stellenbosch University and as an Honorary Research Professor at the Durban University of Technology. He contributes to several advisory boards and committees in the energy sector and is a member of the President’s Energy Crisis Committee (Workstream 7), focusing on data modelling and repository development
