Chevron Continues to Support Africa’s Energy Renaissance, Joins AEW 2024 as Diamond Sponsor
As one of the world’s premier oil and gas supermajors, Chevron has had a long history of major operations in Africa. As the role of the continent’s abundant resources assumes increasing global significance, exploration and production (E&P) activities remain paramount to harnessing its immense and growing potential. It is within this context that Chevron returns to African Energy Week (AEW): Invest in African Energy as a Diamond Sponsor. The supermajor is also confirmed to participate as a sponsor for the AEW: Invest in African Energy 2025 and 2026 editions.
The annual conference and exhibition, set to take place in Cape Town from November 4-8, is Africa’s premier event for the energy sector and serves as the continent’s official meeting ground for key energy stakeholders. With its partnership with the AEW: Invest in African Energy 2024 conference and its rich history spanning more than a century in Africa, Chevron plays a vital role in building on existing assets and exploring new opportunities across the continent. Today, Chevron ranks among the top petroleum producers in Nigeria and Angola and boasts a footprint in other African nations including Benin, Cameroon, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Ghana and Togo.
AEW: Invest in African Energy is the platform of choice for project operators, financiers, technology providers and government, and has emerged as the official place to sign deals in African energy. Visit www.aecweek.com for more information about this exciting event.
Chevron is one of Nigeria’s largest oil and gas producers and investors, operating through a joint venture with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited. In addition to holding interests in eight onshore and near-shore Niger Delta regions, Chevron operates the Agbami field, one of Nigeria’s largest deepwater discoveries. Chevron led the development of the West African Gas Pipeline (“WAGP”) project designed to transport up to 475 million cubic feet of gas through which Nigeria supplies gas to countries in the West African sub-region – specifically, Ghana, Togo, and Benin - helping to boost economic development in West Africa.Â
Chevron is one of the longest-running companies in Equatorial Guinea where it has had a presence for over three decades. Chevron recently signed two production sharing contracts for offshore blocks EG-06 and EG-11 with the state-owned oil company GEPetrol. The blocks add to Chevron’s existing portfolio of assets in Equatorial Guinea where it holds stakes and is the operator of the Aseng oil field and the Alen gas and condensate field and holds an interest in the Alba field. In 2023, Equatorial Guinea and Cameroon signed a bilateral agreement to jointly develop the Yolanda and Yoyo fields which have reservoirs that cross the countries’ maritime borders.
Chevron also ranks among the world’s biggest producers of oil and gas in Angola. In June this year, Chevron signed two Risk Service Contracts with Angola’s National Agency for Petroleum, Gas & Biofuels ("ANPG") and Sonangol Pesquisa & Produção ("Sonangol"), to carry out seismic studies in the Block 49 and Block 50 concession areas, located in the ultradeep waters of the prolific lower Congo basin. . The company currently operates and holds an interest in Block 0, Blocks 14 and Block 14/23. Beyond oil and gas exploration, Chevron is the largest equity shareholder in the Angola LNG (liquefied natural gas) plant, the country’s inaugural LNG facility, and a shareholder in the New Gas Consortium, which helps Chevron meet global demand for abundant, cleaner-burning natural gas.
Elsewhere in Africa, Chevron confirmed that it would drill an offshore exploratory well in Namibia’s Orange Basin which it expects to complete early next year. In Algeria, Chevron signed a memorandum of understanding with the country’s state-owned Sonatrach in June for the development of hydrocarbons in the gas-rich Ahnet and Berkine basins. Demonstrating a whole-hearted commitment to environmental, social and governance standards on the African continent, Chevron will focus on operational efficiency in Algeria while leveraging cutting-edge technology to enhance environmental preservation and sustainability across its operations in the country.
"Chevron's operations across Africa underscore the company's steadfast dedication to the continent's energy sector. From its longstanding presence in Angola and Nigeria, to its significant activities in Equatorial Guinea, growing presence in Algeria and emerging opportunities in Namibia, Chevron's influence is profoundly felt. The company's continuous investment in these regions, coupled with its proactive stance on sustainability, highlights a strong commitment to both energy progress and socioeconomic development," states AEC Executive Chairman NJ Ayuk.Â
Chevron’s participation as a Diamond Sponsor at AEW: Invest in African Energy 2024 reflects the company’s partnership in driving Africa’s energy renaissance. The company represents a strong partner for many African countries, and as the continent accelerates the development and monetization of its resources, Chevron will continue to play a central part in facilitating this growth.
