TGS Joins AEW 2025 as Silver Partner Amid Data Acquisition Drive in Africa

Energy data and insights provider TGS has been rapidly expanding its footprint across Africa, supporting oil and gas exploration through seismic data acquisition and analysis. Reflecting its commitment to working with governments and operators, the company has joined the African Energy Week (AEW): Invest in African Energies 2025 conference as a Silver Partner.

Taking place September 29 to October 3 in Cape Town, AEW: Invest in African Energies is the largest event of its kind on the continent. Uniting the entire energy sector and its value chain, the event drives investment across strategic projects. TGS’ participation is expected to open new pathways for industry collaboration as the continent strives to unlock resources in both frontier and proven petroleum basins.

AEW: Invest in African Energies is the platform of choice for project operators, financiers, technology providers and government, and has emerged as the official place to sign deals in African energy. Visit www.aecweek.com for more information about this exciting event.

Across both emerging and established oil and gas markets in Africa, TGS offers industry-leading subsurface data. Recent efforts to reprocess existing datasets as well as new acquisition campaigns have further strengthened the geological understanding of Africa’s oil and gas sector, supporting ongoing exploration campaigns as Africa targets near-term production. In Angola, TGS has reprocessed a legacy dataset in a block previously held by energy major Shell. The Block 16 GeoStreamer MS3D dataset in the country’s Lower Congo Basin covers 3,684 km² and was reprocessed using modern depth processing workflows to deliver enhanced images beyond the original data. This enabled a detailed evaluation of deeper target plays in both post-salt and pre-salt sections.

In Mauritania, TGS expanded its multi-client data library offshore, with the addition of 101,500 km² of high-quality 3D seismic data. The expansion adds to the existing 19,000 km² of reprocessed PSDM 3D data and multiple 2D seismic surveys. The milestone comes as the country promotes new investment in exploration projects, following the start of operations at the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim LNG project in 2025. The project showcases the potential for large-scale offshore developments, with TGS’ extensive data de-risking exploration for future campaigns.

TGS also holds the largest and most extensive 2D library in Namibia and South Africa, with over 97,500 km² of data. The company is currently adding to this dataset by tying in recent offshore discoveries to explore analogous plays. The Namibian dataset comprises over 50,000-line km of multi-client 2D seismic data and over 97,500 km of regional 2D data across the Orange Basin – the site of several high-impact discoveries in recent years. Its South African dataset features extensive 2D regional seismic in the Orange, Outeniqua, and Durban basins – including 97,500 km of 2D regional data in the Orange and 17,500 km in Outeniqua.

In East Africa, TGS offers expanded seismic data that is expected to support decision-making by major players seeking in-roads to the frontier market. The company signed an agreement with Tanzania’s Petroleum Upstream Regulatory Authority in 2024 to manage and license the country’s extensive offshore subsurface data. The collection includes 2D and 3D seismic data, covering an area of over 132,000 km². The agreement will help identify hydrocarbon plays and allow for prospect-specific analysis and mapping of robust trapping configurations, thereby enhancing the understanding of the region’s oil and gas potential.

Stepping into this picture, TGS’ participation at AEW: Invest in African Energies 2025 reflects its commitment to supporting ongoing exploration efforts across Africa’s hydrocarbon markets. By equipping governments, operators and investors with the insights they need to make informed upstream decisions, the company is driving African oil and gas development. As Africa opens more exploration prospects on the back of licensing rounds, direct negotiation and marginal field opportunities, insights offered by TGS will help unlock new plays across the continent.

“Africa’s underexplored hydrocarbon regions offer significant promise and TGS is working towards unlocking these future plays. The company’s rich and extensive seismic library is a vital tool for operators and governments alike, underscoring the company’s position as a strong partner for upstream players,” states Tomás Gerbasio, VP of Commercial and Strategic Engagement, African Energy Chamber.
